Murder charges in Rothesay killing

A 39 year old Rothesay man has been charged with second degree murder in the death of his common-law partner. Adam Lee Steven Prest made a brief appearance in court yesterday and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance June 10th.

Prest is charged with killing 33 year old Tanya Shand in their apartment on Dolan Road in Rothesay Wednesday morning.

Drowning inquest wrapping up

The coroner's jury will continue its deliberations today into the death of 17 year old Yifan Jason Wang at the Aquatic Centre.

The inquest was told yesterday that the foreign exchange student did indeed drown since there was no evidence of any significant injury.

A lifesaving specialist testified that a lifeguard should be specifically designated to monitor the waterslide when it's in use. Michael Shane, a safety management director and lifeguarding expert based in Ontario, said there should be an attendant at the top of the slide to send swimmers down...and a lifeguard at the bottom specifically to ensure they move safely away from the drop zone. Shane also gave the inquest a list of several safety recommendations.

The four member coroner's jury will come up with a set of recommendations now that testimony has ended.

Rain, rain, rain

There is a lot of rain on the way over the next couple of days. There could be a hundred millimetres or more by tomorrow night...and then more rain on Sunday. Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings for prettty much all of southern New Brunswick....so if your area is prone to flooding be prepared.

Student drug use

Alcohol continues to be the drug of choice for students in New Brunswick.

The 2012 Student Drug Use Survey questioned about 3,500 students in grades 7, 9, 10 and 12 around the province. It found 48% of students had consumed alcohol last year, 28% smoke marijuanna and 22 smoked a cigarette. 11% took oxycontin or codeine without a prescription. 57% also drank a caffeine-laced energy drink.

Those are pretty much the same numbers that a survey in 2007 turned up...but well down from the numbers in 2002.

DNR wants its money

New Brunswickers with unpaid fines from the Department of Natural Resources are at the centre of an Alward Government crackdown. Legislation was introduced yesterday which would see those with outstanding fines by DNR denied hunting and fishing licenses, prevented from entering any hunting, fishing or trapping draws and banned from cutting wood on crown land. Those privileges would remainv suspended until the fine is paid. Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup says other provinces have had success with a similar approach.

Charges for phoney bus passes

An 18 year old man is facing charges of selling fake bus passes. Police say they received a lot of complaints from people about the phoney bus passes being sold online through Kijiji.

The police set up an undercover operation to get some of these passes and arrested the teen a short time later.

Trudeau visits Fredericton

Hundreds gathered near the food court at Fredericton's Regent Mall over the noon hour and not many were there to eat.

They were there to see federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who spent about 45 minutes shaking hands and having his picture taken with a lot of people. After his visit to the mall Trudeau, his life-long friend New Brunswick M-P Dominic LeBlanc and provincial Liberal Leader Brian Gallant, went to the legislature were Trueau was formally introduced to the MLAs.

Teen dead after stunt

A 19 year old man has died after falling from a moving vehicle late last week in Ford Mills, near Rexton. RCMP say he was attempting to climb out a passenger window and onto the roof of a car when he fell and suffered serious injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in Moncton after last Friday's incident but passed away Wednesday.

RCMP are continuing to investigate and believe alcohol may have been a factor. No name has been released.

Senator Duffy speaks

Senator Mike Duffy stopped dodging reporters yesterday and spoke about his troubles on Parliament Hill. Duffy told them he intends to keep his senate seat and he looks forward to an open inquiry into the expense scandal that forced him out of the Conservative caucas. He also said he didn't know whether Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in the loop regarding the $90,000 cheque given to him by Nigel Wright, Harper's former Chief of Staff.

NHL Playoffs...the Rangers avoided a sweep beating the Bruins 4-3 in overtime. Boston leads their Eastern Conference semi-final three games to one. The defending Stanley Cup champions are back in front in their Western semi. Johnathon Quick made 24 saves as the Kings shut down the Sharks 3-0...and took a three games to two lead. Jimmy Howard got the shutout as the Red Wings blanked the Black Hawks 2-0. Detroit leads that one three games to one.

Patrick Roy is back with the Colorado Avalanche as coach and vice-president of hockey operations.

At the Memorial Cup...London beat Saskatoon 6-1 to move into a semi-final today against the Portland Winterhawks. The winner will play the Mooseheads Sunday for the Memorial Cup.

In baseball...Blue Jays bats came alive in a 12-6 win over the Orioles in Toronto. The Red Sox were hammered 12-3 by Cleveland.

In Golf...Ryan Palmer missed the course record by one shot, firing an 8 under 62 in the first round at the Colonial in Fort Worth. Canadians David Hearn and Graham DeLaet are two shots behind heading into today's second round.
